General Common Gateway Interface (CGI) or Java scripts can be used to perform many powerful functions, including adding forms, guestbooks, and access counters to your pages. Your ability to use CGI scripts will usually depend on whether your service provider offers access to the cgi-bin directory of the server.

  • GIF animation tutorial. One of the most popular ways of creating animated graphics on Web pages is through the use of animated GIFs.

General Reference

These sites have large, organized collections of links to information about every aspect of Web page design.

  • Roget's Thesaurus is considered the king of thesauruses. Not only do you find the synonyms you need, but you can also search for antonyms and be enriched by the On This Day feature describing what happened on the current day in the past.
  • Yourdictionary.com offers a complete compendium of more than 1,500 dictionaries in 230 languages, providing the meaning and etymology of the words you seek as well as a word of the day.
  • Strunk and White's The Elements of Style answers your questions about usage and style.
  • Purdue's Online Writing Lab offers many resources for improving your writing.
  • The Book of Cliches organizes cliches into common situations where you can find such gems as "Poor planning on your part does not create an emergency on my part."
  • Deadwood Phrases offers a list of those phrases that are really outdated and shouldn't be used and offers suggestions for more concise wording.
  • Bartleby.com's reference section offers a link to a host of quotation links.
  • Commonly Confused Words is a great way to refernce those difficult to use words.
  • Andrew King's Webreference. A very attractive, well-organized site, with loads of links and substantial amounts of original content.
  • Web Developers Virtual Library. Thousands of links to resources on Web page design.
  • HTML Writers' Guild. An excellent annotated list of resources.

Searching

  • Direct Search. The Direct Search site provides links to more than 1000 searchable databases
  • Lycos. Lycos is one of the traditional search engines that includes an Invisible Web Catalog, which holds a directory of more than 10,000 searchable databases.
  • Infomine. This site gives you access to more than 15,000 academic resources, electronic journals and books, on-line library card catalogs, and directories of researchers.
  • AlphaSearch. This site will bring you to other reviewed sites that collect and organize Web pages that focus on particular subjects.
  • Ixquick. Ixquick is a metasearch engine that was given the highest ratings by both Search Engine Watch and ZDNet's SearchIQ. Ixquick.com searches 12 engines simultaneously and advanced syntax support (beyond the capabilities of any other metasearch engine.
  • DMOZ. The Open Directory Project, is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors.
  • Google Google is a great search engine and according to them "Google searches more sites more quickly, delivering the most relevant results."
